Design Week 4: Finalizing the Design and Client Meeting

Just like that we've reached the halfway point of our summer design semester! After weeks of research, exploration, and designing it was time to make our final decisions on the design and review them with the Kunga family.

06/04/2019 - Day 10

With each team's wall assembly models now complete, we finalized our choice on the 2x6 framing system. This assembly will allow for building off-site in modules, providing great insulation values, minimize the reduction of interior square footage, and serve as the more sustainable solution in terms of material use. With the help of our structural engineer Sarah, we will now analyze deeper the structural implications of this system. From our initial discussion earlier in the semester, this 2x6 system will provide the needed strength for the tallest portions around the upper storage area in a slimmer profile.

06/05/2019 - Day 11

We've made a lot of decisions this past week on the overall design of the ADU. One of the biggest agreements of the group was to use the upper storage loft as an extension of the front living space instead of being a separate, closed off space as it was in the initial design. This allows the unit to feel larger as well as use the upper southern windows as additional light for the entire living space. The dormer above the bedroom was also removed to increase the structural integrity and buildability. To also simplify the structure and water-tight seal of the roof, the upper storage area was extended back the entire length of the unit. These changes, although they may seem small, will have a tremendous impact on the overall feel and stability of the home. We hope that these changes are minimal enough to not trigger an additional conditional use permit as this would compromise our timeline. Other changes await tomorrow's review with the Kungas.

06/06/2019 - Day 12

Over the past three weeks some design decisions couldn't be made or questions answered without input from the client. We met with them today at the Assist office downtown, excited to present our work since we met with them in week one. It was a great meeting to hear what they preferred in the overall design, layout of the interior spaces, and elements that were most important to them. A decision was made to mirror the plan to allow for a bigger work space for Mrs. Kunga's crafts instead of a larger kitchen. Accessibility to and in the space was addressed. The exterior design of the unit was selected as it reminded her of the homes she grew up with in Tibet. It was an extremely valuable design review with them that will now allow us to dive into the final construction documents and have this all ready to go for the city by the end of the semester!
