Build Week 12: We Have a Permit!!!

This week has been long anticipated, and it is finally here! We have been granted our building permit by the city! With this major milestone we leaped forward this week with disassembly of our panels on campus and beginning excavation on site.

Week of November 5 - Days 21 & 22

All of our progress up to this point has been made possible by constructing the building in transportable panels. Having labeled each panel last week, this week we disassembled those panels so that we can now move them to their final home in the Kunga's backyard. We were able to make quick work of the disassembly and now the building we built in 20 short days on campus is gone!
Now that we have a permit, that means that we can start making progress on site to get ready to reassemble the panels. We are so excited to see this new progress! One of the comments we received in the permitting process was that before we can begin work on site, we needed to remove a shed. After a lot of lifting and little progress, we used the ways of the past to roll the shed off the property on logs. It worked like a charm!
Another preparation that needed to happen before further site prep was removing a tree that sat where our living room will be. The Kunga family has been so helpful this week, especially in removing the tree with professional skills. They know what they are doing!

They helped with everything this week from moving the shed, cutting down the tree, digging out the stubborn roots, and even helping dig the foundation, pickax and all. On top of all of that they have gone out of their way to provide us with delicious meals. They are such a wonderful family and we are so excited to make this ADU their reality.
With the site prepped, it was time to dig, and dig we did! There is a lot of dirt to remove for our shallow slab foundation, but we have made great progress.

Colby taught us this week how to work surveying equipment. The amount of construction skills we are learning in this process really is invaluable and will make us much better architects once we are working full time in the industry.
We are so excited to finally have our permit and really get this show on the road. A few more finishing touches will take place on campus to finish our furniture and metal work, but from here on out, we get to be on site, assembling this ADU in its proper place.
