Build Week 7: A Home Takes Shape

After 14 days of construction, we find ourselves with a house! With this week's progress the upper level storage is taking shape and we have nearly finished framing the ADU. It's amazing what a team with a common goal can accomplish in such a short amount of time.

Week of October 1 - Days 13 & 14

We continued working in our groups this week (framing, furniture, and metal) and made some pretty great progress! Some days our accomplishments are obvious and others not so obvious. This week was filled with the big, obvious ones such as framing a large portion of our upper level. We are just three wall panels and our parapets away from our entire building being framed! With this week's additions, we are really starting to feel the entire space. Although it has brought its fair share of challenges, we are so happy that we included the connection from the living below to the upper storage area. It really creates a wonderful space.
Our metal work is coming along great as well. One of the perks of constructing on campus before we get our permit is having the resources of the architecture shop, and the welding booth has been busy with the assembly of our metal shading fins.
Our third group has been hard at work on our furniture. The school's CNC machine is another resource we've been able to tap into to produce our own custom cabinet doors. A lot of the cutting and assembly has now been completed and this week brought sanding and finishing. We've got some pretty nice looking furniture ready to go once we get on site. Until then we're doing our best to find places to store it.
We never would have guessed seven weeks ago when we started this semester that in fourteen days of construction we'd be to where we are now. Next week is Fall Break so we'll have a week off and then once we are back, its all hands on deck to get this finished before the end of the semester in December.
