Build Week 4: Going Vertical

We met with the city this week to go over the permit review and got the answers we were hoping for! With the okay to proceed with our design, we continued construction and started going vertical with our upper storage level.

Week of September 10 - Days 7 & 8

The first half of this week was focused on addressing the comments from our building permit review and continuing what construction we could while these questions were in limbo. Through a lot of research and minor revisions we were able to address most of the comments. That left a few make-or-break questions that required meeting in-person with the city. Until that meeting, on the construction side we continued assembling panels, getting closer to completing the first story.
Our donors and supporters are very interested in the success of this project. It's thanks to them it's even possible to be building in the first place. We had two visits from these groups to check in on the progress and aid in whatever ways they can. Sierra Pacific Windows of Utah came to check our window status again and were happy to find everything exactly as it needed to be. We are grateful for their visits as the last time they came we were able to notice and quickly correct a mistake in our order that would have compromised our design. Our friends from Burton Lumber also came by to see how things are going. It is thanks to their generosity that our wood was ready day one to start assembling panels.
One of campus' busy sidewalks goes right past our building, and we have been attracting a lot of attention of people wondering what we are up to. This week we put up some construction banners to share with the campus community what it is we are doing and who it is that has made it possible.
As mentioned before, there were some big items from our permit review that had the potential to drastically change our project. We met with the city this week to go over those items with them. The two biggest concerns were with fire access to the ADU and the height of the storage space. Both problems were easily figured out in our meeting and it was determined that our fire access is adequate and the height of our building is perfectly within the new ADU code. That means our building moves forward as is and we don't have to chop of the upper storage area! We are grateful for the city's help in figuring that all out. We were also excited to found out that they are thrilled with our project and want to see it succeed as a model of what the new ADU ordinance can achieve in Salt Lake City.
With our okay to proceed we finished framing our main level and started going vertical with our upper storage and roof joists. Preserving the upper section will give a much more open feel to the main living space. It will also provide much needed storage since building this in their backyard required the removal of their existing sheds. We are excited for this week's victories and are keeping our fingers crossed that the next set review will happen quickly and that a building permit will be obtained soon so we can start assembling on site.
