Build Week 3: First Round Building Permit Comments

Construction continued this week, and so did the discoveries. With our first round of building permit comments received, we balanced the need to keep constructing while making adjustments for permitting.

Week of September 3 - Days 5 & 6

With last week's demolition complete, we had our full crew back on our campus construction site and were able to make great speed on more panel construction. By the end of our first day of construction this week the interior walls were complete and up as well as multiple exterior panels. With each added panel the home is taking shape and the spaces we created over the summer become real. There is a difference between what you see on paper and what you experience in person. We are happy to report that the spaces are even better than we had imagined!
Not just walls went up this week. We also started installing electrical boxes, sheathing, the main structural beam, and working on the furniture. Our structural engineer stopped by again to check in and see the progress on the suggestions she gave us in last week's visit. Everything is coming along great! We also had a visit this week from the Kunga's who stopped by to see the home for the first time. They were all smiles as they saw this home becoming a reality. We can't wait until permit comes back all approved and we can move this all over to its permanent home in their backyard.
We have been eagerly awaiting the first news back on our building permit, and this week we finally received it. Being one of the first ADU's to go through the process of permitting in Salt Lake, it is a bumpy process. There is quite a bit of miscommunication between different city officials as to what is allowed under this new ordinance. Further visits with the city face-to-face will be necessary to fully understand the impact of their comments and the effect it will have on our design. Until then we are working as fast as we can to implement as much as we can while still being able to move forward with construction. We can't afford multiple week delays on this project due to the permitting process. That being said, we are hopeful that the city will work with us to make this project a reality. Success of this project is critical to the success of ADU's in Salt Lake City. The whole process is a very valuable learning experience in all that it takes to make architecture happen, even a small, 650 square foot backyard ADU.
