Build Week 2: Site Demo and Continued Construction

Our three major tasks this week were to demolish the dilapidated shed on the site, continue development on the interior furnishings, and to continue production on our wall panels on campus.

Week of August 27 - Days 3 & 4

On the site where the ADU will be placed is a shed in disrepair. The Kunga's no longer need this shed and so the demolition of the shed helped to make this project work on the site. Part of our group spent the week in demo mode tearing down the shed while salvaging whatever materials possible. It was dirty and exhausting work, but by the end of the week, with the help of some delicious food from the Kunga's, the shed was leveled and the site now shows its first signs of the exciting progress coming its way.
Back on campus, wall panel production and furniture design continued. It's a back and forth waltz of fast progress when we are in the groove and slower moments of reanalyzing and adjusting. We need to make everything work just right now so that when we transport these panels to site they still fit together perfectly, the windows sit snug, and that we deliver to the Kunga family a strong and sturdy home. A key component of making everything just right is our base which was completed this week. This accommodates for the slope of the concrete pad outside the shop and makes sure that our building is nice and level.
We had visits this week from two groups invested in the success of this project. First was our wonderful reps that are providing our windows. They made the trip out to site to see how things were going and to make sure that what we were building matched what they were manufacturing. Their visit helped us catch and prevent a miscommunication on sizes that would have required a lot of changes to make work down the road. They were able to quickly fix the order and make sure that the windows that arrive match the design we made over the summer. We also had a visit from our structural engineer. With her help we were able to make modifications that will help the building to be stronger and also help us pass inspection. We are super grateful for both of these visits and their support to make this a safe, strong, and accurate build.
By the end of the week we had doubled the amount of wall panels assembled and put in place (which included finishing the bathroom and mechanical closet), finished the base, finalized furniture design and ordered materials, demolished the shed, and made discoveries that will improve the progress of the project from here on out. Not bad for just four days of construction!

Project Timelapse

Starting this week, we set up a timelapse camera to show our progress! This week we placed our camera in the Kunga's backyard to show the demolition process of the existing shed. Keep checking each week to watch our continued progress. All of our videos can be seen on our YouTube channel as well (link in the footer below).
